This photo of Woodie in the snow is a rare one. In the last 14 years on the road, we’ve (Nala n i)vnever stayed for a full winter. Usually, by now, I’d be thinking about where to head for warmer weather.
This year is looking a little different.
Some dental work will keep me around Wisconsin through December, and I’m leaning toward hunkering down for the winter. There might be a couple of little trips in January, but for now, I’m taking a relax approach to not rush and settle in.
Between diesel prices and the fact that snowbirding doesn’t hold quite the same excitement it once did, staying sounds pretty good. After so many years of moving with the seasons, I’m curious what it will feel like to actually embrace this one.
It also gives me a chance to get back into a steady rhythm at the torch, which never exists driving part time. I’m planning a silver-fumed winter collection, and I’ll be sharing the pieces and some of the process here as they come together.
And there is one other thing: I’ve been hauling my snowboard around ever since we left Santa Cruz. Maybe it’s finally time for it to earn all that space. Haha.
For now, here’s to a Wisconsin winter, some fresh glass, and seeing what comes from staying awhile.
